Instant Messaging
I thought AOL Instant Messenger was pretty prevalent until my brother came to visit. He and his friends only use MSN Messenger and he has about 40-50 people on his "Friends" list. He's a 15 year old Thai teenager with tons of friends and keeps in constant touch with a lot of them.
I knew ICQ had a pretty large internatonal user base but now I'm realizing that none of the services really have the ball completely in their court.
