Yes, my face turns red when I drink

Go Ask Alice!: Face turns red after drinking

In conversation with some friends today, I decided to google and find out why my face turns red and splotchy when I drink. Initially I thought I was allergic to some of the yeasts in beer but I found out that it's most likely genetic.

"....as many as 50 percent of people of Asian descent experience a flushed complexion after drinking alcohol. Alcohol flush reaction, the more technical name, describes the body's inability to break down ingested alcohol completely. You and others like you have an inactive enzyme, aldehyde dehydrogenase 2 (ALDH2), which is normally responsible for breaking down acetaldehyde, a byproduct of the metabolism of alcohol. Acetaldehyde is a toxin and if your body can't break it down, it accumulates and causes flushing. Other symptoms you might experience include dizziness, nausea, headaches, and an increased pulse."

Not that I'm complaining about the inability to become an alcoholic or anything.

Hi...i have major problems with red face, but I learned a tip from a friend...Take pecid ac before u drink and it'll minimize the redness bigtime!

I also turn red even after just one beer, shot, etc. I don't experience any dizziness or nausea, actually I feel normal except for the red face. If drive more than usual (5 or more beers) I sometimes get a stuffy nose and feel a little pulsing on my neck and face. Let me know if you know of any remedy to the redness.

I haven't researched much but as far as I know there really isn't much of a cure due to the way alcohol is metabolized. I'll keep looking though!

I get really red when I drink alcohol, I mean really red!! My face, my neck ,arms, legs you name it.It's really annoying because it just started about 2 years ago and before that I was fine. Now I have to deal with these annoying red blotches all over me that are really unattractive and embarrassing. if anyone knows what i can do to stop this from happening or even to decrease the effects please email me!This is driving me nuts.

i turn bright red even when i have a sip of alcohol. it can be wine, beer or vodka! but here's the strange thing, it just started happening to me two weeks ago. i've been drinking alcohol for close to six years and i never abuse it but everytime i have a drink now, my face turns so red and hot. usually, the redness is around my eyes. i'm confused... what's happening to me?

Posted by: emc at March 7, 2005 12:24 AM

i've had it all my life, i start drinking and my face will start to go blothy red and eventually within an hr it will all be red, i just keep drinking and it usually only last about 2hours then it'll fade away for the rest of the night, stick to one kind of drink otherwise the redness can come back during the night- dont ask me why!

Posted by: saviorrr at April 22, 2005 2:40 AM

This happens to me big time when I drink but only when im stressed out or just have alot on my mind. If im relaxed, no red at all. Maybe it has something to do with blood pressure. Anybody else?

See ya

Facial flushing is thought to be one component of rosacea, and is inherited. This is the common and current theory, certainly upheld by the dozens of dermatologist I have seen. Alcohol is one trigger. Stress, heat, certain foods, unventilated rooms and a variety of other triggers can cause it. I can't drink at all. One glass and I look and feel like I have a serious sunburn. A tense moment or a hot car will make me flare. A yahoo group called rosacea-support has a lot of information on this.

I'm about as white as they come and in the last 12 months (I'm 34) this flushing has happened to me. I get very hot and bright red after drinking a little, but way off drunk. My chest and back become blotchy. It happens when I drink wine and spirits but less so when I stick to just beer. Also once it comes, it stays for about an hour and then goes, even if I carry on drinking. I should add that I have been a happy drinker (not excessive) since my late teens.

I'm worried about this because its embarassing and could impact on my joy of drinking but also (and mainly) in case it indicates that something else is wrong with me - like my liver function.

I've searched the web but they offer nothing by way of remedy (apart from the obvious no drinking....)

HELP!

same here..! i turn all red after drinking a can of beer, but i ain't drunk!! can't my friends just stop teasing me.. sigh! how embarrassing!! i wish there's some cure, or some medication with no side-effect. Is it really effective, taking pepcid ac? By the way, one of the side effect of taking too much pepcid ac or any H2-receptor antagonist (eg: famotidine, cimetidine, ranitidine) is breast enlargement. Good news for girls??? nah, too bad... it happens on guys only.

I have the same problem with red blotches. It is unpredictible - it wasn't always so - why does this happen? Perhaps I'm allergic to alcohol and shouldn't drink at all anymore.

Posted by: lola at July 20, 2005 12:59 AM

The most guaranteed deal is Pepcid AC 20mg x 2. It reduces the redness, difficulty of breathing and splotchy skin. It is trully a miracle for those of us who have suffered for years. If you get red, take it now. Allow for 40-60m and you will notice your drinking life change forever. It's crazy to feel a bit tipsy without the burning face. It's truly remarkable.

When I turned 27, (7 years ago) i sarted to get red face. It was a summer so I thought I was getting a little burnt but as winter came I noticed it was not the sun. I too get red when I drink which is a rarity now. When I'm socially uncomfortable or hot. BUT----I do have slightly high TOP b/p # 150 over 80 could this have something to do with it. Or is it what I always thought, That I am a slightly nervous person and i get red from nerves and also maybe why my top number is elevated

so how long will this last? im going to drink tonight but if will the pepcid ac last thru the whole night?

Posted by: summer at September 26, 2005 4:54 PM

My cheeks get red when I drink and it's too hot. It happens to me all the time. This leads to going outside a lot and having nothing to do there but smoke to pass time and wait till my face turns white again. If I drink outside and it's cool, I'm fine. Weird. Any suggestions except for Pepcid AC?

I've been drinking for about 10 years now and I have never experienced this problem till about 2 years ago... It only happens with hard alcohol and not all the time but its getting progressively worse, my face turns bright red, shortness of breathe, and my heart starts to race. Once i go to beer this will last about an hour and then i'm normal again.
Any ideas what wrong or comments on what i can do to help prevent it?

i tried pepcid ac but it just got me drunk really quick.. read online about that. it increases the drunk affect by about 70 percent more. what i found out is nervesness (bad spelling) and anxiety has alot to do w/it. once i start getting red i breathe really deep a few time and the red goes away. i am a nervous person and have anxiety issues. vodka seems to be less red on the face. but once you get red then you are really nervous that you might get it again. the weird thing is that i wont get red all night but once i goto bed (horizontal) my chest and face get really red and blotchy. i read that red face could be from (low) yes low blood pressure. don't use pepcid. it messed me up many nights and couldn't hang w/my friends cause i was so drunk really quick. also i found out that alot of water before i drank was no good. i used to think it was. RELAX AND BREATHE. try some drinking by yourself and experiment. GOOD LUCK and doesn't this suck...

craziness. i never knew this really happened to others, like it does with me. comforting to know.

i get flushed or red blotches (on my chest) when i'm drinking sometimes. and hot ears! it's been happening for years. like 8 or 9 years (i'm 26).. but seems to be happening less frequently. i read somewhere that 9 years is about as long as this lasts which i think is silly, especially if it's inherited. but maybe that helps you get over it in your mind?

it will happen also, if i'm socially uncomfortable even the slightest (awkward moments or umcomfortable situations that people normally wouldn't blush over). or if it's really hot, and with certain lighting that gives off heat i will flare up. hot cars same thing, hot houses. don't even think about drinking in someone's hot house! drinking outside's fine usually. and yeah, the reddness is usually only there at the beginning for a while. maybe after your drunk you just don't care anymore so it disappears. but while it's red it's like the worse thing in the world. sometimes it's just little rosiness on the cheeks, sometimes my whole entire face and burning ears.

i have definitely gotten self conscious about it, and so if it's bright i get anxiety it will happen.. it's a vicious cycle really.
i saw my doctor and he mentioned the rosacea connection. i've come to find that a lot is probably in your mind (after you've experienced it for a while), with anxiety and worrying, and being nervous about it. we all care about how people perceive us, (myself included as much as i hate to admit it)... so yes it's embarassing.

it's nice to know i'm not alone in it though. when somebody makes an innocent comment about it it makes me feel like crap, and i get very angry and want to basically punch them in the face, cause they have no idea how it feels.
